Introduction

If you want to begin collecting knowledge, I highly recommend using your knowledge menu (H) along with bddatabase.net/us/knowledge to search for the knowledge locations. I also recommend checking out https://grumpygreen.cricket/ which is a knowledge database designed to show you the closest knowledge in your area. It can be really useful when working on increasing your max energy!

Knowledge guides are also planned for the future and will be linked in each section.

Knowledge is the information you learn while traveling and interacting in Black Desert. When you discover Knowledge, it is entered into your Knowledge base (which can be viewed by pressing H).

There are 7 catagories of Knowledge with multiple subcatagories in each one. I will go into these in more detail. Discovering all of the Knowledge in one subcatagory may reward you by increasing your maximum energy.

  • Character
  • Topography
  • Ocean
  • Ecology
  • Adventure Journal
  • Academics
  • Life Skill
  • Learning the ropes of Black Desert
  • Trade

For more information on energy, view the energy section below.

Once you've learned knowledge, you can use them as topics in the Conversation mini-game. For more information on Conversation and Amity, click here to view our guide.

TIP: Knowlege also effects your total Special Fame, which can be found by pressing P. To calculate your Special Fame, you divide your gained knowledge topics (found by pressing H) by 10, round up to the nearest whole number, then add this number to your total contribution points.

Character

Character knowledge is gained by interacting with NPCs in the world. Each subcatagory is split into areas or specific managers. Learning about each NPC in a catagory will increase your maximum energy by 1 – 4. To learn about them you usually just need to speak to the NPC. Some NPCs will have specific requirements, such as talking to another NPC first, and may also require a certain amount of amity with another NPC..

In this screenshot below, you can see that I am not able to talk to the NPC at all until I speak to another NPC first. When you close the window, the NPC you have been told to talk to first, will be indicated on your world map. Simply speak to the NPC to gain knowledge of them, then go back to the original NPC you want to talk to.

 Ecology

Ecology is the knowledge of the monsters in Black Desert. When you first come into contact with a monster you will not have any knowledge of it and the health bar will not appear to go down. Instead you will see a color change going from yellow to red, to indicate the monsters health. When you gain knowledge of the monster, the health bar will go down normally. To gain knowledge of them you must kill them to "discover their weakness". If you are in a party you must make sure you get the last hit on the monster or you will not get the knowledge.

Adventure Journal

The Adventure Journal is one of the harder knowledge entries to gain because it can require you to do various things. Some knowledge can be earned by simply talking to an NPC, or interacting with an object, but many will require you to complete long questlines and some will even require amity with an NPC. The Adventure Journals do give a lot of energy for completing them but can take a lot longer.

Academics

Academics knowledge is mostly gained by interacting with objects such as books, or speaking to NPCs. Most of them are quite easy to complete but don't give a lot of energy.

Life Skill

Life Skills knowledge is learned from your professions. Currently, this section will not reward you with energy for gaining knowledge of them, but some sections such as the "Certificates" section can be collected to unlocked further crafting and processing actions.

Learning the ropes of Black Desert

Learning the ropes of Black Desert knowledge is discovered by following tutorial quests throughout the game. This section does not currently reward you with energy for completing it.

Trade

Trade knowledge is discovered by collecting various trade materials. This section does not currently reward you with energy for completing it.

Ranks & Resetting Knowledge

When you gain knowledge of something, you will randomly be given a rank (C, B, A, A+, S). These ranks effect how you fight monsters:

  • C Rank – Allows you to see the monsters HP
  • B Rank – Increases your defenses against the monster
  • A/A+ Rank – Increases your damage against the monster
  • S Rank – Increases experience gained from the monster, and loot drop chances

Pets, glasses and earrings (pearl store items) can increase your chances of gaining knowledge or gaining higher ranks of knowledge. In my experience I have found that they do make quite a big difference when collecting monster knowledge and are worth the investment. You can also earn these in-game through play-time rewards and various events.

You can reset certain knowledge in an attempt to gain a higher rank, to do this, go to an NPC called "Annalisa" in the Calpheon library. Her location is shown on the map below. Talk to her and select "Knowledge Management", then choose which knowledge you would like to reset, and click "Delete Knowledge".

deXX8vG

It does take up energy to reset your knowledge rank and you may not get a higher rank than before you reset it. I would only recommend resetting the knowledge of monsters you grind often.

Energy

Learning new knowledge will increase your total amount of energy. Your energy will automatically regenerate over time (1 energy every 3 minutes). Completing quests may restore energy as part of a reward. You can also sleep in a bed in your home to regenerate energy faster.

You can see your current and total energy in the top-left corner of your screen.

wcl5bdW

Energy is used for many interactions in-game, such as:

  • Greeting NPCs
  • Stealing from NPCs
  • NPC Tutorials
  • Story Exchange
  • Node Investment
  • Gathering
  • Crafting
  • Speaking in World Chat
  • Hiring Worker Contracts

You can also store/convert spare energy into energy potions to use at a later date or sell on the Auction House. Simply talk to the Alchemist NPC "Alustin" in Velia Town (location shown on the map below) to convert energy to energy potions.

Energy potions do not share a cool-down with the energy tonic.

Energy exchange rates

  • Energy 100 -> Energy Potion (10 Energy)
  • Energy 200 -> Energy Potion (20 Energy)
  • Energy 300 -> Energy Potion (30 Energy)
  • Energy 400 -> Energy Potion (50 Energy
